Log splitter tonnage calculator
The splitting force of a hydraulic log splitter from its cylinder bore and pump pressure.

How it works
Force = cylinder area × pressure. Area = π × (bore ÷ 2)². A 4-inch bore at 3,000 psi gives about 37,700 lbf, or about 18.8 US tons. Marketing figures are often rounded up, so this is a useful check.
Quick reference
| 3½ in | 2,500 psi | ~12 tons |
| 4 in | 3,000 psi | ~19 tons |
| 4½ in | 3,000 psi | ~24 tons |
| 5 in | 3,000 psi | ~29 tons |
Most softwood rounds split easily at 20 tons. Knotty hardwood may need 25 tons or more.
