Air compressor CFM calculator
Add up the air your tools need to find the compressor size, with a safety margin for duty cycle.

How it works
Air tools are rated in cubic feet per minute (CFM) at 90 psi. Add the CFM of tools you run at the same time, then multiply by 1.25–1.5 so the compressor is not running flat out. Compare with the compressor’s SCFM at 90 psi, not the “displacement” figure.
Quick reference
| Brad nailer | 0.3–0.5 |
| Framing nailer | 2.0–2.5 |
| ½ in impact wrench | 4–5 |
| Die grinder | 4–6 |
| HVLP spray gun | 8–12 |
| Dual-action sander | 10–13 |
Typical figures at 90 psi. Your tool manual has the exact number.
Questions
Do nailers need much air?
Not per shot. Rapid framing still benefits from a tank that keeps pressure up.
